Expanding Our Collection

Our collection grows through the generosity of our community. We do not have the ability to purchase items unless money is provided by a grant or a donor for that purpose. Many wonderful items were removed from the Chilkat Valley during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Today, some of them are returning and finding a home at the Haines Sheldon Museum, thanks to the generosity of people who know how important it is to us to have our heritage here.

Interested in donating to the museum?

Thank you! Our museum relies on generous donors to build our permanent collection and share stories of the Chilkat Valley. We sincerely appreciate your interest in donating to our collection.

The museum collects items that are region-specific and relevant to our mission. The museum has a comprehensive Collections Management Policy in place, which is reviewed regularly. Along with our long-range institutional plan, this policy guides the collection’s development. A collections committee helps staff develop the collection a review acquisitions.

If you are interested in donating items, please call the museum or email our Collections Coordinator with a description of your donation to confirm that it fits the museum’s collecting guidelines. For our records, all donations must be accepted by a staff member and require a signed donation form. The museum does not accept “drop-offs” – please DO NOT leave objects at the front of the museum without speaking to a staff member.

Haines Sheldon Museum Art Acquisitions

Like many small museums, the Haines Sheldon Museum has no acquisitions budget. The generous Rasmuson Foundation Art Acquisition Initiative Fund allows us to purchase modern, locally produced art every year.

Started in 2003, the goal of this fund is to support living, practicing Alaskan artists through museum purchases, to enhance the permanent art collections of Alaskan museums, and to encourage Alaska museums to develop formal collection policies.

Check out some of the Sheldon Museum’s most recent art acquisitions! Purchase of these works has been made possible though the Rasmuson Foundation Art Acquisition Fund.
