Alaskan Indian Arts Oral Histories
Funding from the Alaska Humanities Forum is helping us capture and preserve the stories of living artists who worked and studied at Haines-based Alaska Indian Arts from the late 1950’s – 1990’s. These oral histories together with images and objects from our related collection will form the basis of a future travelling exhibit exploring the journey of Tlingit and Northwest Coast form-line art, and the significant importance of Alaska Indian Arts.

A new photo album donated to the collection provides us with a remarkable look at Lutak Inlet in 1917. Over 200 sharp, clear images of families, workers, housing, and the operation at the Alaska-Pacific Salmon Cannery, located roughly near the site of the former Schnabel Lumber Co.
Collections Management
Support from the Museum Alaska Collections Management Fund is allowing HSM to rehouse and catalog early images and archives that relate to Haines (Chilkat) Mission and Haines House (period: 1880’s – 1960). Haines Mission stood on the current site of the museum. Haines House, located on the site of today’s Presbyterian Church, was operated as a boarding facility principally for Alaska Native youth, many of whom were orphans or wards of the Alaska Territory. Colorado-based collections management expert, Peggy Schaller will be in Haines for three weeks in May for this engagement.
